Belonging to the Cistercian Order, date from the twelfth century, and its space was donated by the wife of D. Egas Moniz. Suffered expansion works in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, particularly in terms of the facade and the cloisters.</p>
<p>The Monastery surprises us in the middle of the small town houses, which formed around it, and its glory is marked by various decorative styles that has accumulated over time, from the Romanesque to a later, the Baroque. A National Monument is another example of the Cistercian Order. He became one of the richest Portuguese monasteries, holder of a remarkable library. Today is a point of essential visit for history and stylistic wealth terminating.</p>

<p>Its existence has been documented in the nineteenth century. D. Afonso Henriques donated in 1163, the widow of Egas Moniz, Teresa Alfonso the couto of Algeriz, adding the territory of Ucanha. The bridge must have been built by the Romans, following a road that passed nearby. Teresa Alfonso, founder of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas, donated to the convent couto had received from the king and were monks who benefited most from the old bridge converted to a considerable source of revenue for the toll charges that would be charged.</p>

<p>Constitutes the first monastery of the Cistercian Order in the country, founded in 1144.</p>
<p>In 1152, after the victory of D. Afonso Henriques over the Moors at the Battle of Trancoso, it launched the first stone of the convent church.</p>
<p>A new dormitory and the bell tower were built in the sixteenth century.</p>
<p>The last phase of the monastery expansion works took place in the nineteenth century.</p>
<p>In 1938 proceeded to the restoration of altarpieces, including that of St. Peter, attributed to Gaspar Vaz.</p>
